Infrastructure includes transportation, why is transportation important to a thriving city?

By transportation I mean: roads, highways, airports, planes, seaports, ships, subways, tramways, trolleys, and bus terminals. Can you PLEASE give reasons, like what would happen if we did not have these things, and more.
