A question of Morality for believers, Atheists and Garfnuckles: The Trolley Test?

Rian B asked:

Bystander at the Switch
Suppose that you have been strolling by a trolley track when you suddenly realize that there is a
runaway trolley coming in your direction. If the trolley continues on its present path, it will kill five
track workmen who are repairing the track up ahead. However, you notice that there is a switch
immediately in front of you that you could hit that would turn the trolley onto a side track off to the
right. Unfortunately, there is one track workmen on the side track who would certainly be killed if you
intervene by hitting the switch and diverting the train.
Is it morally permissible for you to intervene by hitting the switch—thereby killing one in order to save
five others? Why or why not?

greetings earthlings! asked:

i do this a lot at Sainsburys, if i am on the ramp out the shops carpark it is very amusing, I pretend its a car im driving like a souped up subaru impreza, in as i hurl myself over the trolleys handle to go fast, and proceed to take it home pretending smugly i have passed my driving test. it hasnt got good brakes .does anyone else? and i am aged 28..i always return the trolley the next day so it isnt ever reported as stolen, i even have my personal favourite trolley, the smaller types. they go faster.

Who has given the Judge the power to fine/jail a person for not going to jury duty?

X X asked:

That has alwayz bothered me. I know our Constitution tells us that we have the right to have a jury if we should ever need one but I never saw in there that it was enforcable to the point of some Jail time and a fine. I mean I wouldn’t mind so much to be on a jury if I didn’t feel like I’m being forced to do something. This is suppose to be a free enough country to let me decide if I want to do something. I have been called once or twice but never assigned and the whole thing sound threatning. They want you to come when they say. Tell you to leave work/family (Some of us can’t do that). They tell you you will be paid $5 dollars a day! What kind of bull is that! We need to survive and no one can survive on $5 dollars a day. They don’t provide for parking in most cases but they have managed to give you a few bus or trolley passes.
So my question is by what gives the court the authority to fine or jail you if you fail to show or don’t want to be apart of this system?
I messed up that question. The constitution from what I read doesn’t say we are forced to report as a juror. I mean that’s the whole reason the Constitution was written right? To get away from leaders and Kings forcing us to do everything without a say in the matter. Let me know how you feel on this!
What law says that it’s a penalty? It’s not something that I have voted for nor have anyone of our people before us. The older generation whould have never put up with it. Back in the day more people went to jury duty willing and happily because they were not forced to do it. I think if there is a law on this then we as people should work to put a law in order to respect the citizen’s choice to go or not and this law should give the citizen’s the right to have resonable wages for their time etc. I would be willing to start a petition to make it law…If I knew the process. who about you?
