I will be in San Diego for about a wk in Oct & trying to determine the best location to pick for a hotel & of course looking for the best price as well. I was considering Mission Bay area but is it expensive to get to stops for the trolley bus tours?

Also which areas should I avoid from a safety perspective. I am travelling alone and so this is definitely a consideration. As well I do not want the hastle of renting a car.

All advise is welcome including any hotel recommendations and/or tour recommendations.
