San Francisco - Bart/Muni/Cable Car?

Kick IT asked:

I will be visiting S.F. soon and will be staying at a hotel right outside the SFO airport. We will be traveling in and out of S.F. to do all of the tourist stuff. A BART station is near our hotel and we can travel into SF that way. But we will eventually need to transfer to either a Cable-trolley car or Muni Bus. Will we need to buy seperate passes or is there a particular pass that covers all the transportation?

  1. I’m so jealous, haven’t been to the city in many many moons…

  2. The BART ticket machines at the airport will dispense a pass. Just insert your card or money and hit “BART Plus.”

However, the “BART Plus” pass will only save you money if you’re staying for more three days. It gives you a set amount of BART fare ($15 to $50 — including free last ride) and two weeks of unlimited light rail, buses, and cable cars. The cheapest one goes for $38.

For three days or less, paying for BART as you go along and using the more limited MUNI passport ($11 one-day / $18 three-days) might end up saving you some money. But remember, BART fare to the airport alone is $10.70 round-trip.

But don’t think about it just in terms of savings. The convenience of having only one ticket (no pocket full of transfer slips, fumbling with change) to worry about is significant. Like a good guidebook, a transit pass will save you time and headaches. And when you’re on vacation, you certainly don’t want to add to your stress levels.
